Modern Meat Sales: Customer-Focused Marketing

A few simple tweaks to your marketing can make a huge difference. Join ChopLocal and the Cornell Agriculture Marketing Program for a free workshop to learn how to simplify the buying process for your customers and boost your profits.

Led by Katie Olthoff, co-founder of ChopLocal, this workshop will focus on practical marketing strategies and simple technology solutions that can help farmers and butchers significantly increase their annual sales. Drawing from ChopLocal’s annual nationwide survey of niche meat businesses and Olthoff’s extensive experience working directly with hundreds of small meat businesses across the country, this presentation will offer actionable ideas to help you increase your revenue.

Matt LeRoux, Cornell Agricultural Marketing Research Program, will share what research on customer spending at farmers markets reveals about consumer preferences and the conclusions of that research. From browsing items to ringing up the order, we will discuss the opportunities to better serve customers while yielding bigger sales for the farm.

About ChopLocal

ChopLocal was launched by farmers in 2020 with the mission to make it easier to buy and sell local meat.

The ChopLocal Marketplace is an online farmers market specifically for meat, serving farms and small butcher shops across the country.

ChopLocal University is the educational arm of the company, providing free and low-cost meat-marketing resources.

ChopLocal in New York

ChopLocal is a finalist in the prestigious Grow-NY competition, which awards up to $1 mil to companies involved in food and agriculture in rural New York.

The ChopLocal team will be visiting New York in October to present meat marketing workshops and tour several farms and small meat processors.

The final competition will be held Nov. 7 in Ithaca. If awarded a prize, ChopLocal plans to expand its team in New York and host additional marketing workshops in the future.

Tiffany Schmidt, Schmidt Beef

ChopLocal is where and how we got started!

Here at Schmidt Beef Co we had big ideas and dreams but our technology background wasn't the strongest.

ChopLocal got us going right away, helped set up our website and teach us how to make our small business dreams grow into reality.

We are still learning how to navigate our website, keep up with the world, and keep adding and trying new things to please our customers and Chop Local always is there to help with friendly people!

Chop Local has also helped us with some really amazing sales and advertising and we are very thankful for teaming up with them and look forward to doing so for many years to come!

Thank you for helping small town farmers and ranchers and supporting local!

Shaun Gillilland, Ben Wever Farm

Ben Wever Farm is a regenerative grass-based livestock farm near Lake Champlain in the Adirondack Park...Being located where we are is a blessing for our farm but also a tremendous challenge getting our products to consumers throughout the year.  We joined ChopLocal in 2023 working to extend our reach to consumers and to move our small business into the digital e-commerce universe.
ChopLocal's instruction, technical assistance, and support made this seemingly gigantic leap into a logical and maneuver with ease. Our business picked up immediately and we were able to ship frozen meat successfully to as far away as Michigan to customers who had only become aware of us through the internet.
Our experience has shown us that E-commerce is an integral arm of business for small producers to get their story out and cultivate a solid customer base. We love being part of ChopLocal. It feels like being on a dedicated team with partners throughout the country. It was a great decision for us.

Tawney Wolters, Fluffy Butt Farm

I’m thrilled Chop Local has been selected as a finalist!

ChopLocal has been a HUGE asset for my small farm. We searched for a platform that would truly fit our needs and still allow us to be us, if things didn’t work out.

Not only has our partnership with Chop Local worked out, you have made us stronger. From helping with the onboarding, classes to help MY farm be successful, and the constant support outside of educational courses and orders.

It has truly been a privilege working with you. I hope this competition will allow ChopLocal to meet the needs of rural NY area.

I know people in our rural areas are hungry for American grown foods and are constantly frustrated with being unable to easily find it.Â
